Amka Africa Justice Initiative (Amka Africa) is an independent, non-profit organisation that works through collaborative tripartite partnerships with university based legal aid clinics on one part, and grassroot organisations on the other part, to promote the rule of law and access to justice for the legally underserved in Kenya. Amka Africa was registered in 2010 but began operations in 2018 when its founder recognised the untapped potential of university legal clinics students and young lawyers in providing affordable, reliable and accessible justice to the needy.
The snowball effect of our work is to transform power relations, social practices and policies so as to enhance access to justice for the marginalised. We envision a society where all persons access justice through the transforming power of practical mentorship of the young lawyers, thereby creating a generation of conscious citizens, policy makers and community leaders who appreciate that access to justice and good governance remains a global problem, and who lend themselves to remedy the challenges.
Through our programs, AMKA has:
